Why is my external hard disk is only found in device manager in Windows 11?

On my Windows 11 laptop I connect several external harddisks usually 1 sometimes 2 at once. One particular harddisk recently does not work anymore.

  1. The harddisk only shows up in device manager (not in Disk management or in the list of drives). The hard disk also shows up where you can disconnect hard disks, which also does not work as it should).
  2. There is no error symbol in device manager.
  3. The connection is via USB.
  4. I tried several trouble shooting instructions which tell about power management and powering USB connections or not, and refreshing drivers of the USB ports.
  5. I also tried to uninstall the harddisk in the device manager which seemed to hang up (took very long with no apparent result so I interrupted it eventually. (A second try succeeded in uninstalling the harddisk but after a windows restart nothing significant changed).
  6. I also tried to use the hard disk on another Windows 11 laptop (same issue there).
  7. When the harddisk is connected it makes a pretty normal humming sound, there were no signs of trouble before this issue appeared.
  8. Checked here for a similar issue. Found this other Super User post which did not help in this case.
  9. I also tried using different USB ports, I have four on my laptop.

Is there anything else to try?

Your drive is broken, failed.

If the data on it is important, you could open the drive enclosure and see if you can directly connect to it, but that has a high risk of permanently destroying the data. Alternately, you could look up professional data recovery services.
