issue with screen resolution after software update

issue with screen resolution after software update

I've recently updated my system through the "Software Updater" app.

After restarting the system the screen resolution was wrong, much smaller than expected and if I look among the Settings I am not able to choose any other screen resolution.

Previously, I was able to solve it by playing around with the settings in the "Software & Updates" app (NB: which is different from "Software Updater").
Apparently, Canonical has decided to remove it from newest versions of Ubuntu (see more: https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/02/ubuntu-26-04-drops-software-and-updates-gui).

After looking around on the internet I followed some instructions:

  • I ran the cmmand ubuntu-drivers devices of which the below is the response from the terminal:
== /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.1/0000:01:00.0 ==

  • I followed the instructions to install the recommended driver: sudo apt install nvidia-driver-595-open which returned the following response: nvidia-driver-595-open is already the newest version (595.71.05-0ubuntu0.26.04.1)

  • After rebooting the system, the problem persists

What else can I do to solve the problem?

Top Answer/Comment:

Not an answer, but a corroborating follow-up. I have the same symptoms after installing the latest kernel update two days ago. I also am using the NVidia proprietary driver.

For now, I am running from a kernel restored from my last Timeshift system image backup, dated July 10, which works fine. Because of the 640x480 fallback resolution, I couldn't use the Timeshift GUI, and had to fall back to the command line interface. (Maddening!)

I waited a day, and tried the update again, with the same result. There was at least one error message, possibly because I was running from a kernel that the update was trying to remove (?).
