Comment: First thing I'd be working out is Ubuntu product & release details, then explore what has changed on your system since the problem appeared. Critical in that is likely when you booted up & logged in, and changes done in the prior session before that; though some changes take effect straight away; most don't. You can explore apt logs on your unstated system for clues; though it's a little more involved for other package types, your CLI history may help for changes you make etc... but consider these details WITH knowledge of what you're using (esp. product/release details).
