Google Chrome frequently crashes and becomes slow on Ubuntu 24.04 despite enough CPU/RAM resources

For about the past week, Google Chrome has been crashing frequently and has also become noticeably slower.

I have not changed my environment or Chrome settings recently. CPU and RAM usage seem to have plenty of headroom, and I do not have an unusually large number of tabs open. In fact, I used to keep more tabs open before without any issues.

There does not seem to be any clear pattern to when the problem occurs. Chrome may freeze or crash while scrolling, but it can also happen when I am not actively interacting with the browser.

I have already tried clearing the cache and browsing history, and I also changed settings such as Memory Saver, but none of these made a noticeable difference.

I could not find any obvious error messages or signs of system instability, so I would appreciate any advice on how to investigate or fix this issue.

I found a similar unresolved issue on Ask Ubuntu.

Environment:

  • OS: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS

  • Hardware: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-7E16

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7900X × 24

  • RAM: 128 GB

  • Chrome version: Version 149.0.7827.155 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Top Answer/Comment:

Try turning off On-device AI, Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed, under the browser System settings. You might also want to turn on Show tab memory usage, under Appearance settings menu to see if there are any leak. Under Performance settings, you can toggle on Performance issue alerts, and Memory saver if required to isolate the issue.
